NowCasting Storm Update #4-
Radar will fill back in this morning as Nor Easter deepens, some dry slotting is occurring this morning, this was expected and forecasted.
Snowfall lingers through 9PM, heaviest and most persistent across NE parts of the region and east of the river.
Data continues to support our change to lower amounts across SW parts of the region where back edge a lower snowfall rates will impede accumulations. This potential was mentioned as early as Sunday evening.
Localized area of down-sloping highlighted 24 hours ago remains an issue for parts of Ulster and points SW.
Additional accumulations between 6am- 9pm, in areas not impacted by down-slope noted below, and back edge of precipitation. 6”-15”. Additional accumulations where precipitation ends prematurely on SW edge, or where downslope persists throughout the day may be as little as 1”-6”
Final snow-map remains in place with down slope concern area highlighted within a red circle.
A wild morning across the region, with all of the complexity we imagined coming to fruition. Incredible observations coming in with wildly varying snowfall totals over short distances. A localized downslope across Ulster into parts of Orange forecasted in our yesterday morning update, has been observed and continues to be present in data.
Snowfall rates of 1-3 inch per hour have occurred in portions of the region. Power outages where snow has fallen the heaviest are ongoing.
Data continues to project that the radar will once again fill in this morning with heavier bands of 1-2”+ per hour snowfall returning to the region as our Nor Easter continues to deepen to our east and is pulled west to a near stall by the energy phasing into it. The latest HRRR showing what the radar will look like at 5PM. Heavy snow region wide with the exception of a localized area of down-sloping, as NE winds sink off the Catskills to the north. Notice the sliver of rain surround by snow? Just how localized is the downslope? We have a township that has nothing but rain on its west end, and 2-4” on its eastern end.
Through 9PM a band is still sitting over the Hudson Valley. The next two images are the NAM and HRRR projected snowfall, you can see two features, the back edge we mentioned as a concern yesterday morning and the localized downslope impacts.
Its just a slushy mess in Saugerties Village this morning. A nothing burger storm…
I’m near St Remy and we have about 5-6″… soooo… :/
It is almost 8am on Tuesday and we live in the Woodstock/Saugerties area. Almost NO snow on the ground. Maybe 1/4 of an inch if that. It was too much rain for it to stick around. Although we still have today and tonight and so we shall see.
It was the same by us in Saugerties/Mount Marion area. I am now at work across the river. I wonder if the snow accumulations will increase in our area over the course of the day.
I live by the Taconic there’s at least 6 inches of snow. We got hit More in the east. Not sure when the snow started but when I woke up at 6:30 there was plenty of snow there at least three or 4 inches Poughkeepsie also has it I live in East Fishkill.
In the Fallsburg area and we had a dusting of snow by 1:30 a.m., but then at 5:00 a.m. we had 3-4″. It continues to snow as expected.
About 6 inches here in High Falls, hard against the Gunks ridge. Still snowing, but it’s very light here at 7:55 am Tuesday.
I am in that red circle, BTW.
I live in Red Hook, at least 6 inches and still falling,
In Poughquag I went to bed at midnight with no snow, woke up at 7am with about 6 inches on the ground.
Saugerties village is just a slushy mess this morning. A nothing burger of a storm so far…
I was disappointed when I awoke to practically a dusting of snow in the Mount Marion/Saugerties areas. As I travelled to work in Claverack/Hudson, there was definitely more snow on the ground. The rain that I had been experiencing at home turned to sleet and then into snow on my way to work. Once in Claverack, the snow was falling pretty well and there was far more ground coverage and the roads were not clear as they were from Saugerties up the thruway till I exited at Catskill. Will Saugerties get more snow or are we to remain hardly touched?
8:30 am in Lexington 8 1/2 inches and coming down trees are heavy
We have about 6 inches and still falling heavily in Highland. Trees and branches are bowed under the weight of the snow. Snow itself is not quite as sloppy heavy as the last storm a few weeks ago, but not the fine powdery type either.
5-6 inches in New Paltz and still snowing but very gently.
Sone Ridge at Oliverbridge / Ashokan Reservoir area. Minimal slushy snow on ground. Maybe 1-2 inches in spots, though some areas none. Windy with light snow now. Not sure if much is sticking. It was rain mixed with slush most of night. Didn’t stick until 4 am or so.
right on the red line New Paltz /Highland had 7″ at 7am
It’s 9am Tuesday and we’ve got about 5 inches in Wallkill/Town of Shawangunk. It had almost stopped but is picking up again.
Looks like 1-2 “ on the ground in New Paltz
My road looks drivable.
I don’t have a snowboard but I did clear the outside deck area yesterday. I measure 8″ of snow at 9:15AM. I’m about 1900′ above sea level and face the north and west winds in Cragsmoor NY.
West Hurley an inch at most unless- there is some rapid precipitation today not clear how we’ll meet these snow totals.
9AM Tuesday Ulster Park, 1 mile w/of 9W: about 4″ on the ground, brief power outage this morning
Currently my inner radar is more finely tuned than the ever changing forecasts. I wish it were possible for this site to post more than once daily. It would be helpful. Perhaps they are a small-staffed volunteer operation?
My prediction is that the power will go out in the mid-hudson region for about six hours. Of course this is not my preference since I have only electric heat. But que sera babies.
Poughkeepsie/Hyde Park border. We have a good 8 inches at 9:30am. Coming down pretty good.
2-4” in west Hurley by the ashokan reservoir- barely flurrying now – 9:45am.
Please explain “downsloping”.
Rhinebeck about 4-5” as of now.
Mt Meenahga— Wawarsing, just west of the Red Oval. 1650 feet up on Shawangunk Ridge. About a foot altogether at this point, light snow falling. 10 am.
Kingston, at least 8-10 inches and it’s still coming down. heavy, wet!
Good 6 to 7 inches in the village of Fishkill
Holmes, NY. Right now more than a foot of snow and still coming down very heavy. I think we’re going to end up on the 16″ to 18″ mark. I’ve already had trees come down in my yard!
