Friday 1/30: Potential Record Cold Temperatures Overnight

We’ve gotten accustomed to bitter cold temperatures over the past two weeks, but tonight we may test the limits of our tolerance for the cold. The Polar Vortex has sent a wave of intensely cold air into the Northeast, and is bringing temperatures that are 20 to 40 degrees below average to the Hudson Valley.

Friday night, we’ll have clear skies, and calming winds. When we factor in the deep snowpack, you have the perfect conditions for maximum radiational cooling. Temperatures are only in the single digits & low teens as of sunset. So once the sun goes down, temperatures should crater near or below zero by midnight.

The record low in Poughkeepsie is -15°. Just how cold it gets tonight remains to be seen. Local topography, elevation and wind direction will be a factor. The consensus data has temperatures well below zero. The European model is frigid… with between -5° and -10° for overnight lows. However, the graphic shown here is the HRRR model, which is high resolution. It suggests that the valley traps the coldest air, & temps fall between -10° and -20°. The GFS model supports this idea, dropping Poughkeepsie to -21°!! If the HRRR & GFS models are correct, tonight will break records around the valley.
Regardless of the details… an extremely cold night lies ahead for the Hudson Valley. These temperatures are not just uncomfortable, they can become dangerous if skin is exposed to these conditions for extended period of time without the proper attire. Please remember to check on those who may be at risk, and make sure they are safe and warm tonight and the days ahead. Also remember these conditions can be damaging, make sure to take precautions against frozen pipes, especially if you’ve had issues in the past.

We’ll be tracking the cold air, and will have updates as needed. Stay warm, everyone!
