The work week will close out on Friday with some spectacular summer weather.
Sunshine will mix with increasing afternoon high clouds across the region. The mid summer sunshine will bring us a good deal of heat, along with some humidity. Afternoon high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s are expected, with ‘real feel’ temperatures close to the actual air temperature. It will feel every bit like a mid summer day across the Hudson Valley, with temperatures roughly 5 degrees above average.
Saturday Afternoon 500mb Anomaly (Jet Stream)
This upper level air map of the eastern US shows Hurricane Ernesto just off screen, near Bermuda. That system will stay safely east of the Hudson Valley and northeast. That’s thanks largely to the upper level low pressure approaching from the Great Lakes (blue area). That upper level low will help steer Ernesto out to sea… but also keep the Hudson Valley unsettled between Saturday and especially into Sunday.
Scattered late day showers and T-Storms are possible on Saturday… but those look to be not too numerous. On Sunday the showers and T-Storms could be a bit more widespread, especially in the Catskills and western parts of the region. We’ll have to track the details through the weekend. By later in the day Sunday and on into Monday… that’s where the best chance for steadier, heavier rainfall amounts are expected. The graphic above shows roughly 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain by Tuesday morning… but most of that falls Sunday night into Monday.
So despite atmospheric instability resulting from the upper level low pressure system… we could potentially squeeze a decent weekend out in some areas, it will require a bit of luck on Sunday. If you have plans over the weekend, be sure to check back for updates through the weekend.
