Groundhog Day… Evening Light Snow Likely

A Bitter start to our Groundhog Day Sunday… as everyone’s favorite furry rodent gets prepared to tell everyone whether winter is over or not. While Punxsutawney Phil,,, who turns 139 years old this year… gets ready to make his forecast, we’ve got a forecast of our own to discuss…
As mentioned we have a bitter cold airmass over the Hudson Valley that snuck in Saturday afternoon and deepened overnight. Sunday will start off in the single digits and teens, with clouds advancing in early. We’ll spend the entire day in the 20s… and the light snow should hold off until after sunset. A warm front associated with a low pressure in Canada will move toward the Hudson Valley late Sunday afternoon. Guidance suggests that the snow should develop from west to east between 6pm and 9pm on average. The steadiest snow falls between 9pm and 11pm… with everything tapering off between 11pm and 1am for most of us.
When all is said and done, a general coating to 3 inches is expected… with most places seeing 1 to 2 inches. The best chance for amounts near 3″ would be in the higher elevations of the Mid Hudson Valley. The system is weak and disorganized, so it should be short lived, but still capable of causing trecherous travel Sunday night. Be sure to use caution if travelling Sunday night into Monday morning. It wouldn’t surprise us if a few delays were likely Monday morning. Be sure to check back for updates Sunday afternoon and evening as the storm approaches.
