Precipitation will continue through this morning, with bands of moderate to heavy precipitation rotating into the region from SE to NW. During times of heavier precipitation rates, light mixed precipitation with flash over to heavy snow as dynamic cooling tilts the balance between near freezing surface temps and colder air aloft. When precipitation eases, precipitation will tend to switch back to a mixed precip of rain and snow, especially across the lower elevations.
Model guidance for additional snowfall need to be reduced as it shows 10-1 ratio snowfall where we are likely seeing 8-1 or less in the valleys. So an additional 1-2” of wet snow is possible through about noon, this will be especially true across the higher terrain away from the valley. Guidance supports the break down of precipitation from SE to NW between noon and 2pm.
Latent warmth will tend to rapidly improve road conditions during precipitation lulls or when precipitation ends this afternoon. This melt layer under snow covered roads has also led to very treacherous travel across parts of the region where snowfall has been most persistent. Temps will not drop back below freezing overnight so persistent slick travel is not expected.
