Our very cold December continues… but with temperatures closer to average for this time of year. After our warm storm system on Friday melted all the snow across the region, another weak system will seek to restore our snowpack (if you can call 1 to 3 inches “snowpack”). An approaching warm front will push enough mild air over top of cold air at the surface, to generate a band of light to moderate snow Tuesday morning.

Light snow should develop by sunrise on Tuesday for most of the Hudson Valley. That light snow will become steady and continue into the early afternoon, before tapering off during the early to mid-afternoon hours. Temperatures will begin in the upper 20s & low 30s, so snow is expected to accumulate on all surfaces initially. Temps will rise near the freezing mark and hold there for much of the day, allowing for treated primary roads to improve… while secondary and back roads could remain quite slick. The back edge of the snow begins to pull away during the mid-afternoon.

Snow accumulations are expected to be 1 to 3 inches on average. This is a short duration, rather light event… with a limited amount of moisture. But due to the timing likely will result in many school delays and cancelations. Also, with holiday travel, we want everyone to exercise appropriate caution and care on the roadways. We’ll continue tracking this system over the next 24 hours… Have a nice Monday afternoon!
