After a heatwave to start the work week, some MUCH different weather heading our way beginning on Thursday. An approaching cold front will draw southerly winds out ahead of it, which will converge with some cold air approaching from the north. This collision of air masses will have the potential to generate a significant rainfall event for portions of the Hudson Valley.
Scattered rain showers will begin to break out Thursday morning… mainly to our north. But as the cold front pushes further south… that area of steady rain will push toward the Hudson Valley. In addition… with so much moisture in the atmosphere, we could see some localized heavier storm cells develop on the front side of the approaching rain. Locations where these heavier storm cells persist for an extended period of time could see an increased threat of Flash Flooding. This will also result in a varying range of rainfall totals around the region.

Expect the periods of moderate to heavy rain to continue through the late afternoon and into Thursday night. During the overnight Thursday into Friday, the steadier rainfall should become scattered rain showers… and the rain showers should taper off Friday morning. By the time the rainfall tapers off on Friday afternoon, the region should see a widespread 1 to 3 inches of rainfall on average. Some areas will see the lower end of the range… while isolated locations could see over 3 inches.
Temperatures during the event will range from the 60s to low 70s. Some MUCH cooler weather for our Thursday and Friday across the valley. We’ll be tracking things closely and share any alerts that are issued. Please use caution, especially in the flood prone areas. Check back for updates as the rain begins to move in on Thursday.
