Sunday Discussion: Light Snow / Mix Overnight

A weakening low pressure system will push east from the Ohio Valley on Sunday, and reach the Hudson Valley near sunset on Sunday.

Timing:

  • 5pm to 10pm: period of light snow showers possible
  • 10pm to 2am:  period of light snow… mixing with rain & freezing rain south of I-84
  • 2am to 6am: scattered light snow… freezing drizzle and rain showers south of I-84
  • 6am to 10am:  scattered light wintry mix, changing to rain showers for entire region

Accumulations:

  • Catskills:  2 to 4 inches of snow possible
  • I-84 on North:  Coating to 2 inches of snow (some light icing in spots)
  • South of I-84:  Coating to 1 inch, some light icing possible

The system is rather disorganized and doesn’t have a lot of precipitation with it.  But there could be enough cold air left over from our arctic airmass… to give us a period of light snow (mixing with freezing drizzle and light rain) overnight Sunday night into Monday morning.

The precipitation could start as early as 5 or 6pm, depending on how dry the air across the Hudson Valley is.

Futurecast Radar:  6pm Sunday to 7pm Monday

The first band of light snow tries to move through the Hudson Valley around 5 or 6pm, but the cold, dry air in the region could cause that to evaporate before reaching the ground… something we’ll be watching closely on Sunday.  But as the evening progresses, a more widespread band of snow is likely to reach the valley between 10pm and 2am.

The question will be, how much moisture is available over the course of the night.  You can see on the futurecast above, that the precipitation shield somewhat collapses as it reaches the Hudson Valley.  So we’ll also be watching the radar to see how things develop on Sunday evening.  The last thing we’ll be watching closely are the temperatures across the valley and in the atmosphere Sunday night.  Temperatures will be near freezing across the lower half of the valley… and the entire atmosphere is likely to have temperatures very close to freezing.  This could result in the snow mixing with or changing to rain or freezing rain.  With temperatures so cold the past few days, freezing rain could coat the ground in places where it falls, causing some very hazardous travel.

The timing of all of this will likely result in a dicey Monday morning commute.  The bulk of the moisture appears to exit the region near sunrise on Monday, but temperatures are not expected to climb above freezing in many areas until mid morning on Monday.  So the early morning commute could be delayed for schools in the area.  We’ll be watching all of these things closely as we go through the day Sunday.  Be sure to check for updates along the way.  Stay warm!
