Total Rainfall Sunday 10/12 – Monday 10/13 (so far)

The vast majority of the rain has dissipated across the Hudson Valley. The primary low off the Carolina coast, and the weakening secondary low off the coast of Delaware, continue to highlight the disorganized nature of this nor’easter. With the weakening low off the coast of Delaware stalled out… our winds remain off the Atlantic Ocean, and so the scattered showers we’re seeing are spotty in nature.

For Tuesday… We’ll expect to remain mainly cloudy, with blustery winds… with isolated areas of light rain showers and patchy drizzle. Temperatures on Tuesday will likely hold in the 50s to near 60°. Winds will gust 15 to 30mph.

When we look at the rain that fell across the region from this system… the dry air punching in on the western edge of the system created a SHARP cutoff between 1 to 2 inches of rain… and less than a half inch of rain. The western half of Orange county saw barely a half inch of rain… while portions of Putnam and Westchester Counties saw a soaking rain Sunday afternoon and evening… with some locations exceeding 2 inches. This setup reminds us very much of the setups we sometimes see in the winter. That low level dry air invading on the west side of the coastal circulation just eats away at the storm… much more than the computer data predicts. It really makes for a nightmare forecasting snowfall totals… thankfully, that wasn’t a concern this time.
