– Wet snow arrives mid AM w/ temps in upper 20s
– Temps rise to low/mid 30s, wet snow changes to rain
– Slushy coating to 2″ before changeover
– A few slick spots and some snow covered roads possible
A weak disturbance moves into the Hudson Valley on Tuesday morning, and enough cold air will remain in place to bring a period of light to moderate snow. Morning temperatures will be in the upper 20s, so the snow should accumulate on all surfaces at the onset. But temperatures should continue rising into the low 30s by late morning / near noon. This will result in more of a ‘wet snow’ that will struggle to accumulate in some locations because of the higher March sun angle. So salted roadways should improve before noon in many places. But where the snow falls steadily… slick & icy spots will be a concern. So please factor that into your plans as you travel Tuesday morning and early afternoon.
But milder air is pushing into the region from the southwest… and at 5000 feet (cloud level), temperatures will climb above freezing between noon and 3pm in most places. This will cause our wet snow to change to a cold rain… with air temperatures at the surface expected to hold between 32° and 36°. A couple patchy areas of freezing rain can’t be ruled out… but most of us should change straight over from wet snow to a cold rain. Periods of scattered rain showers will then be possible through the evening hours.
We’ll be watching the situation closely and updating overnight. And even though this is a relatively minor event… we would anticipate a lot of school delays, closings, and early releases on Tuesday. Stay safe friends!
