Tuesday’s Weather : Scattered Light Snow & Wintry Mix Possible

– First wave: 11am to 3pm: Scattered light snow / sleet possible
– Second wave: 7pm to 11pm: Light snow / Wintry mix possible
– Dusting to 1″ snow + glaze of sleet and freezing rain

A weak warm front will pass by on Tuesday, followed by a weak cold front later in the evening. This will mean a couple opportunities at scattered light snow and sleet around the region as some milder air tries its best to work into the Hudson Valley.
Tuesday will start out cold once again… with temps in the single digits and low teens. But clouds advance in early… and lock in the cold air at the low levels. About 5000 feet above our heads however, some milder air will be pushing northward. That milder air over the cold air at the surface may have enough moisture to generate a brief period of light snow around mid day (11am to 3pm in general). That light snow could mix with sleet of freezing drizzle near and south of I-84 thanks to that mild air at the mid levels. There’s not a lot of moisture with this disturbance, so the light snow / mix may not even reach the ground across the lower half of the valley. But surface temps should remain in the upper 20s for most locations, which could lead to some slick spots on roadways.

Another round of light precipitation should arrive between 7pm and 11pm. It will spread light snow into the Catskills and northern HV, but once again with milder temps near or just above freezing at 5000 feet, the light snow may mix with or change to sleet and light freezing rain in the mid and lower Hudson Valley. This could cause some icy spots Tuesday night, with up to an inch of light snow and ice possible.
A very weak system, but a little snow and ice can cause big headaches in some cases. We’ll need to watch this closely the next 24 hours. But icy travel Tuesday night is possible. More as we get closer, later tonight and Tuesday AM.
