Wednesday Discussion : Welcome Rain on the Way

We’ve had a very dry month of September, so when we look at the potential for rainfall over the next 3 days, it’s a very welcome sight.

Computer guidance is struggling with the details, but anywhere from a half inch to an inch of rainfall appears possible across the Hudson Valley by Friday morning.  The setup is complicated, with high pressure trying to push back into the northeast by late week.  But before it can… a batch of widespread rain showers will push into the region on Wednesday.

The futurecast radar image shows that while we’ll have a few scattered showers Wednesday morning… the number increase during the day… and widespread showers are likely by late afternoon on Wednesday.  Periods of light to moderate rain are then possible through Wednesday night, and on into Thursday.

Futurecast Radar loop : 6am Wednesday to 8am Friday

You can see the periods of rain showers are consistent throughout Wednesday night.  However on Thursday things get tricky… as high pressure tries to push back into our area from Canada.  That may cause a focused band of moderate to heavy rain to develop Thursday afternoon… and we could see some areas pick up over 2 or 3 inches of rain by Friday.  This is far from a guarantee however, as some of the models don’t extend the heavier moisture into the Hudson Valley… which would give us less rain, closer to a half inch.

We could certainly use the rainfall across the area, so we’ll be monitoring this closely over the next 48 hours.
