A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the region this evening, into Thursday morning.
Timing:
– 3pm to 7pm: Scattered light snow showers develop
– 10pm to 3am: Light snow mixes with sleet & freezing drizzle
– 3am to 7am: Light sleet & ice, mixes / changes to light rain showers in valley
– 7am to 1pm: Light wintry mix / scattered rain showers taper off
Impact:
– weak storm brings light wintry mix to Hudson Valley
– icy travel possible Wed night, Thu AM, due to sleet & snow
– Temps rise above freezing by sunrise on Thursday
Snow Accumulation:
– Catskills : 1 to 3 inches, followed by sleet & ice accretion of 0.1″ to 0.25″
– Hudson Valley: Coating to 2 inches, followed by ice accretion of 0.05″ to 0.10″

An extended period of scattered light snow showers are possible this evening, before milder air moves into the Hudson Valley. The snow showers are expected to be very light, but could coat the ground and accumulate an inch or two before midnight. Temps in the upper 20s to low 30s should allow for roads to get quite slick in spots, so travel is not recommended unless necessary.
Milder air moves in near midnight, and surface temps rise near 32° after midnight. A period of light sleet and freezing drizzle is possible after midnight, but surface temps should gradually climb near and above freezing by sunrise on Thursday. Icy roads are still possible for the morning commute, but conditions will vary from town to town. Temps are expected to rise above freezing across the entire Hudson Valley by 6 or 7am (with the exception of the Catskills). This should result in rapidly improving conditions Thursday morning. But with the potential for ice, it’s very important to assess the conditions in your location… as pockets of colder air are possible in sheltered valleys.
Scattered light rain showers are possible through mid day in the valley, with light freezing rain and sleet possible in the Catskills. Everything should taper off near mid day, as temps climb into the low 40s Thursday afternoon. More updates shortly…
